O'Grady grew up in Wheaton, Illinois and graduated from the Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. She is the daughter of Jan O'Grady (a Financial planner) and Jim O'Grady. The family was raised by her parents in Wheaton (Illinois) and she completed her studies in 1981 at Wheaton's North High School. Prior to shifting from Illinois to Los Angeles, she appeared in several commercials. Career O'Grady started her career as a the model of Montgomery Ward, and well having a number of commercials. She starred in the 1988 romantic comedic film, She's Having a Baby. She was later a regular in the ABC Drama China Beach with Dana Delany. Her other guest appearances included TV shows, independent movies, and many other shows. Her first major role was that of Donna Abandando on the ABC crime drama NYPD Blue. O'Grady played the big-haired team secretary from 1993 to 1996. Each season, she received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
